Nate and I are looking forward to what will be one of the biggest years of our lives. In 2012, we will be buying a house, getting married, going on our honeymoon, spending Christmas in Michigan, and freezing our butts off at the Winter Classic for the New Year. While we can hardly wait for the wonderful madness to begin, our pocketbooks have a different opinion. Last year, we came to the conclusion that our variable spending was a little outrageous...and had nothing to show for it. We indulged in a few trips to the movies every month, ate out at least once a week, went out for drinks just as often, bought as many of those things you just can't live without whatever it may be. As another one of our resolutions this year, we are seriously cutting back on the frivolous spending. This weekend was the perfect example.
On Friday, we went to the movies for the first time this year. He reluctantly agreed to see Woman In Black with me, which I thoroughly enjoyed, Nate might be having nightmares for weeks. To save even more moola, we bought a date night movie deal from Costo...2 movie tickets, 2 large drinks, and a large popcorn for $26. You can't beat that. We basically got the drinks and popcorn for free, its a savings of almost $14. Yeah, its at least $40 to go to the movies in Edmonton. We're not in Soo, Michigan anymore. We love going to the movies, even if we settle for one movie a month, which is by no means torture, we will be saving around $80 a month as compared to last year. Not bad.
On Saturday, we decided to go ice skating for some free entertainment. There is a great outdoor ice rink across the street from our house. We brought some hot chai's from home, we already have our own skates so there was no need to rent, and we were the only ones there. It was a little chilly, but it was so much fun and free.
On Sunday, we went to Crate and Barrel to finish our wedding registry. I would highly recommend a registry with Crate and Barrel. We have had such a great experience with them. We began our registry last week and we were invited back to complete our registry at one of their private events. Every Sunday this month and one Sunday a month after February, Crate and Barrel closes their doors to the public so that wedding registrants can focus on their registry without the crowds. When we arrived, they took our coats, handed us a mimosa and a scanner and said "have fun!" The staff were there giving demos of their most popular small appliances, knives, and bakeware. We sampled paninis and smoothies and even chopped some veggies. Some might not call this a good time, but for Nate and I it was a blast. Haven't you always wanted free reign of a store while its closed? They really roll out the red carpet for their registrants. They even gave us a gift, a beautiful glass flower vase. How's that for free entertainment? It was like Christmas!
Since January, we are already noticing a difference in our savings. Let's hope we can keep it up and hope the world doesn't end this year because we're really looking forward to it. 2012. worst. movie. EVER. Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for the biggest year of our lives so far.
