I love Thanksgiving and this year Nate and I get to celebrate it three times! The first turkey dinner was last weekend at Kathy's mom's house. She had quite the spread prepared, it was a great intro to the holiday! Thanks Brenda! Today we are celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving and Vera has been cooking up a storm since yesterday...22 pound turkey, homemade cabbage rolls, perogies, famous mashed potatoes, stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, 2 apple pies, my mouth is watering in anticipation. And our third celebration will be the American Thanksgiving, let's be honest it might be low key compared to the first two.
So here's a little history lesson for those of you who ever wondered why the Canadian Thanksgiving is 6 weeks earlier than the American holiday. I realize this might be old news for many, but I will be honest, I never knew until I stumbled across an insert in the newspaper, oriented towards children, explaining the history of North American Thanksgiving. It's quite simple really, in general, Thanksgiving was a celebration of the end of the harvest season, not to diminish from the whole first settlers breaking bread with the natives and all, that still rings true, not changing history here. But since Canada is much colder that most of the United States, their harvest season ends earlier, hence an earlier feast. Well that's enough history lesson for today kids.
Happy holiday weekend Canadians!
